Importing an American Car to Belgium: 2026 Guide
We select classic American cars in the USA, handle transport and customs, and deliver the vehicle, cleared through customs in the European Union, directly to your dealership or your address in Belgium. Local registration is the responsibility of the buyer. In Belgium, taxation depends on the region — Flanders, Wallonia or Brussels — and classic cars 30 years old or more have much more lenient rules.
This guide summarizes what you are responsible for when registering a car in Belgium and the indicative costs for 2026. Values should be confirmed with the authorities or a broker before each purchase.
How does delivery work in Belgium?
- Selection in the USA. Licensed dealer in the USA, with access to thousands of cars in every state. Before any commitment, you will receive photos, available documents, and the type of title (clean, salvage, rebuilt).
- Maritime transport. From the USA to Europe, with assistance until arrival.
- Customs processed. The car is cleared through customs upon entry into the EU: customs duties are never paid a second time in Belgium.
- Delivery in Belgium. Delivery to your dealership or your address. You can also choose a car from our stock in Portugal.
Customs duties and VAT
Customs duties. From July 1, 2026, cars manufactured in the USA, with proven origin, enter the EU with 0 % duty (Regulation (EU) 2026/1455, in force until 12/31/2029). Classic cars 30 years old or more, in original condition and of a discontinued model, enter as collector's items (code 9705), also with 0 % duty. In both cases, nothing to pay in Belgium.
VAT. For a reseller with a valid VAT number (VIES), the sale is made without Portuguese VAT, and the VAT is automatically charged in Belgium. For a private individual, the VAT from the Portuguese invoice or the margin scheme applies. The exact framework is specified in each proposal.
Registration tax (BIV / TMC)
The vehicle registration tax is regional: BIV in Flanders, TMC in Wallonia and Brussels. It is calculated based on power, age and emissions, and is significantly reduced for vehicles 30 years or older (low fixed amounts, depending on the region — to be confirmed in the regional simulator).
Before registration, request the E705 sticker on MyMinfin (free of charge, mandatory for VAT taxpayers).
Approval
An American car without a Certificate of Conformity (COC) needs individual approval and must pass the import technical inspection (GOCA). Vehicles with a first registration prior to June 15, 1968, can go to any inspection center.
Classic system: plate O
The O (oldtimer) plate is for older vehicles used for leisure: professional use and daily commutes are prohibited. The minimum age and frequency of inspections depend on the region — confirm before registration.
Annual tax
Circulation rate Annual tax, calculated based on tax rates. In Flanders, a vehicle 30 years old or older pays a fixed amount of €109.73 (from 01/07/2026 to 30/06/2027).
