Importing an American Car to Norway: A Guide 2026

We select classic American cars in the USA and arrange transport to Norway. Norway is not part of the EU: the car enters as an export and pays Norwegian VAT. If the car is 20 years old or older, it is exempt from the hefty registration tax.

This guide summarizes what you are responsible for when registering a car in Norway and the indicative costs for 2026. Values should be confirmed with the authorities or a broker before each purchase.

How does delivery work in Norway?

  • Selection in the USA. Licensed dealer in the USA, with access to thousands of cars in every state. Before any commitment, you will receive photos, available documents, and the type of title (clean, salvage, rebuilt).
  • Maritime transport. From the USA to Europe, with assistance until arrival.
  • Exporting outside the EU. Sales to Norway are considered exports and are not subject to Portuguese VAT; local taxes are paid upon entry into the country.
  • Delivery to Norway. Logistics up to the border or final destination, defined on a case-by-case basis with your customs broker.

Taxes on entry into Norway

At the entrance, you pay VAT of 25 % (deductible for a registered dealer). The registration tax (engangsavgift), calculated by weight and CO2, is completely exempt for vehicles 20 years old or more — the recycling fee (vrakpantavgift) of 2,400 NOK remains.

Approval: Statens vegvesen

After customs clearance, the car is approved by the Statens Vegvesen. There is a specific regime for cars from the USA and Canada: vehicles registered abroad for at least 6 months, in their state of origin or nearby, with American compliance documents.

Veteran regime

At 30 years old, the car has veteran status. The daily mandatory insurance rate (trafikkforsikringsavgift) drops to 0.39 NOK/day from 01/03/2026, compared to 6.52 NOK for a normal car.

Annual tax

The only annual tax is the trafikkforsikringsavgift, charged daily along with the insurance.
