How much does it really cost to import a Ford Mustang from the USA? Detailed costs in 2026.

It's the first question for anyone considering importing a Mustang from the United States to Portugal: how much will it cost in total? The answer isn't just the purchase price. Between shipping, customs broker, taxes (VAT and ISV), inspection, and Portuguese registration, there are several items to consider. Here we present real-world simulations for three Mustang profiles in 2026.

The 8 components of total cost

Regardless of the model chosen, the final cost of a Mustang imported into Portugal is divided into 8 main items:

  1. Purchase price in the USA - Varies depending on the model, year, condition, options and location of the seller
  2. Pre-purchase mechanical inspection - Essential investment (200-350 €) to avoid mechanical surprises
  3. Inland transportation in the USA - From the seller to the port (Long Beach in California or Newark in New Jersey)
  4. Maritime transport — 20″ or 40″ container to the port of Leixões or Sines
  5. Transport insurance - Covers damage or loss during the crossing
  6. Portuguese dispatcher - Handling customs documentation (DAV)
  7. Portuguese taxes — TARIC, VAT (due upon arrival at customs) and ISV (calculated based on engine displacement, indicative values, to be confirmed with the Tax Authority)
  8. IPO inspection and registration - Final administrative costs to circulate legally

Watch out for models after 1996

For a Mustang manufactured after 1996 (i.e., less than 30 years old in 2026), the ISV (Vehicle Tax) also includes the CO₂ component and can be quite substantial. Indicative values, to be confirmed with the Tax Authority.

For these reasons, importing modern Mustangs is rarely financially competitive compared to the European market. Vehicles over 30 years old face a different situation (exemption from road tax with a historic vehicle certificate), but VAT and vehicle registration tax remain applicable.

How to minimize costs: 5 practical tips

  1. Buying outside California or Florida - States like Texas, Arizona or Tennessee have average prices 10-15% lower for the same model (less exposure to salt and more local demand).
  2. Shared container - Much lower cost than the exclusive. For a standard Mustang Coupé, a dedicated container is not justified.
  3. Taking advantage of EUR/USD fluctuations - Buying when the euro is strong against the dollar (above 1.08 USD per EUR) represents tangible savings.
  4. Mandatory mechanical inspection - The €250-300 invested in a pre-purchase inspection typically avoids €3,000-10,000 in surprises from hidden mechanical problems.
  5. Confirm the vehicle's classification as a historic vehicle (+30 years) — Exemption from IUC (Vehicle Tax) with certificate; ISV (Vehicle Tax) continues to be calculated based on engine displacement, indicative values, to be confirmed with the Tax Authority. The year of manufacture, not the model year. Some 1996 Mustangs released in mid-1995 may or may not qualify depending on the exact date.

The alternative: buy it already cleared through customs in Portugal.

For end customers who want to avoid the entire process (2.5–3 month wait, currency risks, bureaucracy), buying a Mustang that has already been cleared through customs in Portugal is the simplest option. See our gray 1967 Mustang Coupé or explore all stock available.
