It's the first question for anyone considering importing a Mustang from the United States to Portugal: how much will it cost in total? The answer isn't just the purchase price. Between shipping, brokerage, taxes (or exemptions), inspection and Portuguese registration, there are several items to consider. Here are real simulations for three Mustang profiles in 2026.
The 8 components of total cost
Regardless of the model chosen, the final cost of a Mustang imported into Portugal is divided into 8 main items:
- Purchase price in the USA - Varies depending on the model, year, condition, options and location of the seller
- Pre-purchase mechanical inspection - Essential investment (200-350 €) to avoid mechanical surprises
- Inland transportation in the USA - From the seller to the port (Long Beach in California or Newark in New Jersey)
- Maritime transport - 20″ or 40″ container to the port of Leixões or Sines
- Transport insurance - Covers damage or loss during the crossing
- Portuguese dispatcher - Handling customs documentation (DAV)
- Portuguese taxes - TARIC, VAT and ISV (or exemption if +30 years)
- IPO inspection and registration - Final administrative costs to circulate legally

Watch out for models after 1996
For a Mustang produced after 1996 (i.e. less than 30 years old in 2026), the ISV exemption does not apply. Taxes can be very substantial:
| Mustang Version | Price USA | Estimated ISV | Total nationalized |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mustang GT 2005 (4.6L V8 engine) | 16,000 USD | ~8 500 € | ~32 000 € |
| 2013 Mustang Shelby GT500 (5.4L V8) | 40,000 USD | ~14 000 € | ~62 000 € |
| Mustang GT 2018 (5.0L V8) | 32,000 USD | ~11 000 € | ~52 000 € |
For these reasons, importing modern Mustangs is rarely financially competitive with the European market. The 30-year exemption makes all the economic difference.
How to minimize costs: 5 practical tips
- Buying outside California or Florida - States like Texas, Arizona or Tennessee have average prices 10-15% lower for the same model (less exposure to salt and more local demand).
- Shared container - Much lower cost than the exclusive. For a standard Mustang Coupé, a dedicated container is not justified.
- Taking advantage of EUR/USD fluctuations - Buying when the euro is strong against the dollar (above 1.08 USD per EUR) represents tangible savings.
- Mandatory mechanical inspection - The €250-300 invested in a pre-purchase inspection typically avoids €3,000-10,000 in surprises from hidden mechanical problems.
- Confirm eligibility for exemption +30 years - The year of construction, not the model year. Some 1996 Mustangs launched in mid-1995 may or may not qualify according to the exact date.
The alternative: buying already nationalized in Portugal
For end customers who want to avoid the whole process (waiting 2.5-3 months, currency risks, bureaucracy), buying a Mustang that has already been nationalized and has Portuguese plates is the simplest option. See our gray 1967 Mustang Coupé or explore all stock available.
